Sindh Health Crisis: 75% Top Posts Vacant

The Sindh health department is grappling with a significant crisis, as over 75 percent of its high-level technical positions remain unfilled. This extensive vacancy rate critically impairs the province's ability to manage and respond to numerous infectious disease outbreaks currently affecting its population. Sanctioned Grade-20 posts within the health management cadre are largely empty, primarily due to retirements without timely replacements.

Promotions for senior health officials have been on hold for the past six years, resulting in only 17 officers actively working at the top level. This lack of experienced leadership has diminished the department's operational oversight and its capacity to form effective committees for tackling public health challenges, a practice last seen in 2018 for Naegleria fowleri.

This human resource deficit leaves communities highly susceptible to diseases such as HIV, mpox, measles, malaria, and dengue. Officials highlight the urgent need for technical expertise to anticipate, prevent, and respond to these growing health threats. Despite these concerns, the department is expediting promotions for existing staff rather than new inductions, while also planning to hire 2,000 doctors at Grade-17 and more in lower grades.
