Sikkim has recorded a significant 15.8% decrease in its suicide rate within a two-year period, as indicated by the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. The rate has fallen from 43.1 per lakh population in 2022 to 36.3 in 2024.
Health Minister GT Dhungel welcomed this decline, attributing it to the collaborative efforts of the Health and Family Welfare Department, mental health experts, schools, NGOs, and community organizations. He highlighted that various mental health programs have improved awareness and access to care.
Key measures implemented include anti-stigma campaigns, community screening, training for healthcare workers and teachers, and the expansion of crisis support services. The minister emphasized the importance of seeking professional help and utilizing available resources like the Tele-MANAS helpline.
The Health Department stressed that these figures underscore the necessity of sustained mental health interventions and community support to further reduce suicides and enhance care accessibility across the state.
