- A ₹500 crore budget allocation supports this comprehensive digital upgrade.

The Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) in Lucknow is embarking on a significant transformation known as "SGPGIMS 2.0," aiming to achieve a fully paperless hospital environment. This ambitious project involves establishing a cutting-edge digital health archive and patient data hub. The initiative is supported by a substantial ₹500 crore allocation from the government budget.
This digital transformation will securely house the records of over 50 lakh patients, significantly bolstering cybersecurity measures. Professor Radha Krishna Dhiman, SGPGIMS director, stated that the complete digitization process is anticipated to take one year. The move is designed to enhance the speed, accuracy, and scalability of healthcare delivery while minimizing errors and improving transparency.
Patient data will be digitized from the initial point of contact in the emergency department, encompassing clinical notes, prescriptions, and treatment histories, accessible via various devices. The existing Hospital Information System, dating back to 1998, will be upgraded to meet modern interoperability and cybersecurity standards. This upgrade aims to reduce the nearly 70% of doctors' time currently spent on paperwork, freeing them for patient care and research.
The new hub will leverage anonymized patient data for advanced research and predictive analytics, utilizing AI tools to aid in interpreting reports, predicting outcomes, and optimizing treatment. The system's continuous learning capability is expected to improve clinical outcomes over time. Additionally, the initiative integrates with the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM), linking records to unique ABHA IDs for seamless access across India and enhancing telemedicine services.
