Silent Killer Sepsis Claims Fit Mum's Life Rapidly

A woman who was described as the 'life and soul of the party' and enjoyed a fit and healthy lifestyle tragically died from sepsis just days after attending a barbecue. Claire's daughter, Steph Burgoyne, 20, explained that her mother's sudden illness was initially mistaken for food poisoning.

Within hours of arriving at the hospital, Claire became delirious, her skin turned purple, and she developed multi-organ failure. Doctors made the difficult decision to place her in an induced coma in intensive care, commencing dialysis as her body did not respond to medication. It was later revealed that Claire did not have a spleen, which significantly hindered her chances of survival.

Specialists could not determine the exact origin of Claire's sepsis, though it was deemed unlikely to have come from her hospital work. Her family, including her stepdad Sandy and grandmother Denise, are still coming to terms with her rapid decline. Steph highlighted how sepsis is a 'silent killer that does not discriminate.'

In honor of her mother, Steph and her family have initiated a fundraising campaign for Sepsis Research FEAT to raise awareness of the condition. Steph implores others to familiarize themselves with the signs of sepsis, emphasizing that early recognition can save lives.
