A patient's harrowing experience with sepsis after spinal surgery at Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) in Nottingham is being shared to raise awareness. Dianne Pole, 59, underwent surgery for a long-standing spinal curvature on October 12, 2023.
Following the procedure, Pole developed an infection, leading to severe pain, confusion, and breathing difficulties. She was diagnosed with sepsis and required urgent treatment, including blood transfusions and intravenous antibiotics.
Over nearly three months in hospital, Pole underwent seven operations to clear the infection and remove damaged tissue. The metalwork inserted during her initial surgery was also replaced. Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust has apologized for her experience.
