Summary
- Liquid SDF halts cavity progression in children.
- Trial shows non-invasive treatment is safe and effective.
- SDF could transform dental care for anxious patients.

A new clinical trial indicates that a simple liquid application can halt cavity progression in young children, potentially eliminating the need for drills and fillings. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF), an inexpensive liquid, was applied directly to decayed teeth in a large U.S. study.
The phase III trial, involving 830 children under six, demonstrated that SDF successfully arrested decay in over half of the affected baby teeth. This offers a non-invasive alternative to traditional cavity treatments, which typically involve drilling and anesthesia.
Researchers from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry led the study, with findings published in JAMA Pediatrics. The treatment's safety and effectiveness are supported by the strongest evidence to date, potentially leading to FDA approval.
SDF could significantly improve dental care accessibility for various groups, including toddlers, individuals with developmental disabilities, and those with severe dental anxiety. While the decayed tooth portion permanently darkens, the benefit of avoiding invasive procedures is substantial.
Experts anticipate that FDA approval could encourage wider insurance coverage and adoption by healthcare providers, ensuring more children receive timely treatment before cavities become painful or require surgery.
