A pioneering maternal-assisted Caesarean section, believed to be the first in Scotland, has been successfully performed, bringing immense joy to mother Leila El Alti. This innovative procedure allowed Ms. El Alti to actively participate in the birth of her daughter, Aurora, by pulling the baby from her womb onto her chest.
The procedure took place at University Hospital Wishaw in North Lanarkshire. Ms. El Alti, who had previously experienced traumatic births, described the moment as "the most magical experience of my life." She expressed a desire to recommend the procedure to other women seeking an active and empowering role in their C-section births.
Ms. El Alti, originally from Lebanon and now a lecturer at Edinburgh Napier University, shared her history of post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from previous birth experiences. She detailed how staff at NHS Lanarkshire agreed to the maternal-assisted option, involving detailed discussions and a simulation session.
