Teen's Brain Tumour Removed with New 3D Exoscope

A revolutionary 3D robotic exoscope, the first of its kind in Scotland, has been successfully used for the first time at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow. This advanced technology was instrumental in the recent surgery of 13-year-old Toby Peart, who was treated for a non-cancerous brain tumour measuring approximately 13-14mm.

Toby, originally from Strathpeffer, experienced leg pain and pins and needles starting in April 2025, leading to his diagnosis via MRI scan at Raigmore Hospital. Within days, he was referred to Glasgow for specialist treatment. His surgery took place in November 2025. Initially, Toby experienced paralysis on his left side post-operation, but he made remarkable progress.

His father, Marc Peart, expressed immense gratitude, noting Toby's rapid recovery and return to school in January. The new exoscope technology provides surgeons with enhanced visualization, illumination, and depth perception, while also allowing them to operate in a more comfortable, upright posture. This contrasts with traditional microscopes, which require prolonged head-down positioning and can limit surgical angles.

Consultant neurosurgeons highlight the technology's benefits for patient outcomes and its positive impact on teamwork and training in the operating theatre. The successful use of this innovative system marks a significant advancement in neurosurgery within Scotland, offering new hope for patients facing complex procedures.
