Scotland Faces Blood Shortage: Urgent Donations Needed
7 Oct
Summary
- Fewer than 2% of Scots regularly donate blood.
- Hospitals require about 450 blood donations daily.
- Demand for O Positive, O Negative, A Positive, B Negative is high.
The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) is issuing an urgent appeal for blood donations as stocks have been declining for several months. Debbie McNaughton from SNBTS highlighted that autumn presents particular challenges, with fewer donors coming forward due to seasonal illnesses, the start of the academic term, and darker evenings.
This dip in donations, combined with a consistent demand for around 450 donations daily, has created a critical situation for hospitals. The SNBTS is especially seeking donations for O Positive, O Negative, A Positive, and B Negative blood groups, which are experiencing particular demand. Blood has a limited shelf life of 35 days, underscoring the necessity of regular donations.
Currently, fewer than 2% of people in Scotland regularly donate blood. The SNBTS encourages individuals aged 17 and over to donate at least three times a year. Donor centres are located in Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Inverness. Those wishing to help can book appointments online at www.scotblood.co.uk or by calling 0345 90 90 999.
