A secondary school in Caerphilly has temporarily ceased operations following a widespread outbreak of a flu-like illness. St Martin's School reported that more than 250 pupils and staff members have been affected by the mystery bug, prompting an immediate closure.
The head teacher confirmed a significant outbreak, leading to the school's temporary shutdown for a thorough deep clean. During this "firebreak" period, online learning will be provided to students. A total of 242 pupils and 12 staff members were absent due to the illness.
Reported symptoms ranged from vomiting and diarrhoea to high temperatures, coughs, headaches, and general fatigue. The average recovery time for those affected appears to be approximately seven days. The school aims to resume normal operations after the cleaning process is complete.
