Measles Alert: New Case Confirmed in Beaufort County
12 Jun
Summary
- A new adult measles case confirmed in Beaufort County, unrelated to Hampton County.
- Potential exposure sites include Publix, Beaufort High School graduation, and Dataw Island.
- Vaccination is the best prevention, with the MMR vaccine over 97% effective.

The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) has confirmed a new case of measles in an adult Beaufort County resident. This case is separate from a previously reported instance in Hampton County, and the individual's vaccination status is unconfirmed.
Public health officials identified several locations where exposure may have occurred. These include the Publix Super Market on Lady's Island, the Beaufort High School graduation ceremony, and the Dataw Island Community Center pool/gym. The risk of exposure is limited to specific dates and times previously announced by the DPH.
Individuals who may have been exposed are advised to monitor for measles symptoms, which include fever, cough, runny nose, and a subsequent rash, for up to 21 days after the exposure date. Measles is highly contagious and can spread through the air. The DPH stresses that vaccination, particularly the MMR vaccine, is the most effective method of prevention, with over 97% efficacy.
This new case occurs amidst ongoing awareness of measles following a significant outbreak in Spartanburg County earlier in the year, which was one of the largest in the U.S. in 25 years. The state is reinforcing public health measures to prevent further community spread.
