Sault Ste. Marie's Group Health Centre (GHC) has enhanced its breast cancer screening services with a new, state-of-the-art mammography unit. This $300,000 upgrade introduces advanced imaging technology that utilizes low-dose X-rays, resulting in clearer and more detailed images.
The revitalized unit is projected to serve approximately 6,000 patients each year. Its enhanced capabilities aim to support more accurate screenings, facilitating earlier identification of breast cancer and reducing the necessity for repeat appointments, thereby easing patient stress.
This crucial service upgrade is particularly significant as the GHC and Sault Area Hospital are the only two locations offering mammograms in the Sault region. The improved technology aims to expand service availability, preventing residents from needing to travel to distant cities like Sudbury or Hearst for screening.
Breast cancer advocates, including local survivor Karen Brunetta, have applauded the upgrade. Brunetta, who founded "Breast Friends Sault Ste. Marie," highlighted the importance of accessible screening, especially for a growing number of younger individuals diagnosed with the disease. The community's generous support, including a $150,000 matching donation, made this investment possible.
