Addiction and homelessness advocates in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, are celebrating the launch of a new 24/7 outreach and wellness response team. This crucial service is made possible by a $3.5 million federal investment over two years through the Emergency Treatment Fund.
The District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board has acquired three mobile vehicles—two SUVs and a former ambulance—to facilitate this round-the-clock operation. These vehicles will be utilized by outreach teams from CMHA Algoma to provide accessible medical, mental health, addiction, and housing support.
This initiative extends the reach of the existing Community Wellness Bus, which currently offers limited daytime services. The new teams will respond to calls at any hour, offering assessments, referrals, harm reduction supplies, and basic necessities. Local non-profit SOYA anticipates this will significantly alleviate their own street team's workload.
While the program is currently earmarked for two years, city officials are hopeful that collected data will support its continuation as a long-term fixture. Sault Area Hospital has applauded the effort, recognizing its role in connecting individuals with appropriate care and preserving emergency room resources for urgent cases.
