Effective July 1, 2026, women in Saskatchewan aged 40 and older can now access screening mammograms through the BreastCheck program without requiring a physician's referral. This initiative represents the concluding phase of an 18-month expansion plan by the provincial government.
The broadened eligibility is expected to allow roughly 76,000 additional women to undergo this important health screening. The Saskatchewan Cancer Agency highlights that approximately 75 percent of breast cancers in the province are detected early through routine BreastCheck screenings.
"Regular screening is an important way to look after your health," stated Karen Efthimiou from the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, emphasizing its role in detecting changes before symptoms manifest. Provincial clinical and support services vice president Kevin Hare added that opening screening to women from age 40 empowers them to take an active role in their breast health.
Women meeting specific criteria, such as having no current breast symptoms and no history of breast cancer within the last five years, can book appointments directly. Most eligible individuals are advised to have a screening mammogram every two years. Services are available at eight designated screening sites across Saskatchewan, supplemented by two mobile mammography units that serve rural and northern regions.
