- The trial was established using funds raised in memory of Sarah Harding.
- Annette Illing received her diagnosis a decade before routine screening.

A groundbreaking breast cancer risk assessment trial, established in memory of singer Sarah Harding, has successfully identified early-stage cancer in a young woman years before standard screening. Annette Illing, 39, from Manchester, enrolled in the Breast Cancer Risk Assessment in Young Women (BCAN-RAY) study and was diagnosed in June 2025.
Annette's participation in the BCAN-RAY study, funded by The Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal and Cancer Research UK, allowed for her early detection. This trial, which began in May 2023, was set up following Harding's death at age 39 in September 2021, embodying her wish to improve early detection methods.
Harding's legacy has facilitated the identification of women at high risk, including those without a family history. Annette, who has three daughters, is now cancer-free and undergoing hormone therapy, expressing profound gratitude for the life-saving intervention. Her experience underscores the study's success in potentially preventing future tragedies.
