Sanofi SA has appointed Paulo Fontoura, MD, PhD, FAAN, to the pivotal role of Executive Vice President and Global Head of Research & Development Pharma. This appointment, effective September 1, places Fontoura at the head of Sanofi's innovation strategy, encompassing research, translational medicine, clinical development, and regulatory affairs. His mandate is to advance the company's pipeline and expedite the delivery of new medicines globally.
This strategic move occurs as Sanofi drives an R&D transformation. Concurrently, Sanofi confirmed it is entitled to $24.5 million in regulatory milestone payments. This entitlement follows the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's accelerated approval of TZIELD (teplizumab-mzwv). The drug's indication is to delay the decline in endogenous insulin production in children, marking a significant development in treating type 1 diabetes.
Fontoura brings over 25 years of extensive experience from academic medicine, translational science, and clinical development. His leadership is expected to further Sanofi's efforts in areas such as immunology, rare diseases, and oncology, building on the company's established strengths in prescription medicines and vaccines.
