U.S. health authorities are investigating a multistate salmonella javiana outbreak linked to jalapeno peppers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, along with state and local health departments, are involved. Reported illnesses began between June 19 and August 2.
As of August 19, 431 people across 32 states have fallen ill, with 57 hospitalizations but no reported deaths. The contaminated jalapenos have been traced to Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors. Major restaurant chains like Chipotle and QDOBA have ceased serving affected jalapeno peppers.
Coast Citrus Distributors has agreed to recall the implicated jalapeno peppers. Taylor Farms has also recalled food items containing these peppers. Distributors and restaurants are advised not to sell or serve fresh jalapenos from Sinaloa, Mexico, and any recalled or unconfirmed jalapenos should be discarded.
The FDA has stated that there is no ongoing risk from these establishments to consumers in this outbreak. The agency is working with Coast Citrus Distributors to trace the full distribution of the products. Consumers who recently dined at Mexican-style restaurants and have become ill are advised to seek medical care.
