An ongoing outbreak of Salmonella infections has been linked to broccoli sprouts, with the number of reported illnesses climbing to 32. Federal data indicates that these cases have been identified across six states, resulting in three hospitalizations. The majority of cases are concentrated in Washington state.
The outbreak has been traced to broccoli sprouts produced by Evergreen Fresh Sprouts LLC. These recalled sprouts were distributed to various food service customers and retailers in Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Utah, and may have been shipped to additional states.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection include high fever, bloody diarrhea, and dehydration. While most individuals recover within a week, vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness.
Consumers possessing the recalled broccoli sprouts, sold in plastic bags or clam shell containers with specific expiration dates up to September 16, are urged to dispose of them or return them. Thorough cleaning of any surfaces that may have contacted the sprouts is also recommended. Anyone experiencing Salmonella symptoms should contact a healthcare provider immediately.
