Summary
- NHS is piloting a year-long house visit vaccination program in Somerset.
- Qualified nurses will administer vaccines and address parent concerns at home.
- The initiative aims to reach about 400 children facing access barriers.

A new NHS pilot program in Somerset is bringing vaccinations directly to children's homes in rural areas. This year-long initiative aims to increase vaccination rates by offering house visits, particularly for families facing barriers to accessing GP appointments.
Qualified nurses and midwives are receiving additional training to safely administer vaccines during these home visits. They will also provide support and address any questions or concerns parents may have. The program is specifically designed to reach children who have not taken up previous vaccination offers.
Councillor Graham Oakes highlighted the importance of accessible vaccinations for child health, especially in remote locations. The pilot expects to support around 400 children, addressing low immunisation rates in certain areas where infection risks are higher. This health visitor-led program is planned for a national rollout next year.
