Roche Rushes Ebola Test Amid Outbreak Fears
5 Jun
Summary
- Roche rapidly developed a research-use-only test for Ebola Bundibugyo.
- The test was created in six days to aid in urgent public health responses.
- It is designed for use in laboratories for rapid validation and surveillance.

In response to a recent surge in cases and a World Health Organization Public Health Emergency declaration, Roche has swiftly developed a research-use-only molecular PCR test to detect the rare Ebola Bundibugyo virus. This critical diagnostic tool was created in a remarkable six days by Roche's subsidiary, TIB MOLBIOL.
The Bundibugyo virus, a less common strain of Ebola, has prompted an urgent need for rapid and accurate diagnostic methods. Roche's new RUO assay is designed for dispatch to laboratories, allowing for rapid validation for local use. This approach bypasses the extensive timelines often associated with formal in-vitro diagnostic approvals.
TIB MOLBIOL leveraged its extensive library of pre-designed tests and control materials to quickly develop and test primer and probe combinations for the Bundibugyo virus. Performance was validated using clinical samples, providing immediate feedback. CEO Dr. Marcus Droege highlighted the critical role of research-use assays in the initial phase of outbreak response, emphasizing their function in supporting surveillance and informed decision-making.
Roche is actively collaborating with public health laboratories and authorities in affected regions to ensure prompt access to this testing capability. The company has a history of developing rapid RUO tests for various pathogens, including mpox and Covid-19.
