A state-of-the-art £6.5m robotic operating theatre has been fully completed at the University Hospital of North Tees. Construction commenced in February 2024, culminating in the recent finalization of an 11-bed recovery area designed for post-operative patients. This new facility is set to transform surgical procedures, allowing for less invasive operations that significantly reduce recovery times.
The theatre will primarily be utilized for gynaecological and urological procedures. Consultant surgeon Anil Agarwal highlighted that the new recovery space will enhance patient care and streamline patient flow. The overall project has been described as ambitious, involving the construction of an entirely new section elevated over a courtyard, creating a future-ready theatre suite.
Beyond the operating rooms, the expanded facility boasts a dedicated training room, a new emergency maternity theatre, improved recovery spaces, and updated staff amenities. Senior operations manager Alison Coates emphasized the ambitious nature of the design and development, while Jordan Pearson, design and development manager, hailed it as a 'theatre suite fit for the future,' benefiting both patients and staff with an advanced environment.
