Young Girl's Spine Transformed by Robotic Surgery
22 Aug
Summary
- Severe scoliosis corrected with robotic-assisted surgery.
- Growth rods used to allow spinal development.
- Final spinal fusion performed at skeletal maturity.

A five-year-old girl, identified as Zoya, was diagnosed with severe scoliosis, presenting nearly a 65-degree spinal curve. Due to her young age and ongoing growth, conventional spinal fusion was not an option. Instead, a robotic-assisted growth rod procedure was initiated in 2018 to control the deformity and accommodate spinal development.
Over six years, Zoya underwent four distraction surgeries to lengthen the growth rods as she grew. This phased approach successfully managed the scoliosis progression. In 2026, by age 13, Zoya reached skeletal maturity, making her eligible for final corrective surgery.
Recently, she underwent robotic-assisted spinal fusion, a procedure that included detailed osteotomies to enhance spinal flexibility and enable precise correction. The surgery successfully stabilized her spine and corrected the curvature. Zoya is now recovering remarkably well, resuming light activities and experiencing increased height.
