Summary
- Robotic mitral valve replacement performed on teen and elderly patient.
- Minimally invasive robotic surgery leads to faster patient recovery.
- Hospital highlights growing use of robotic cardiac procedures.

Gleneagles Hospital Chennai recently marked a significant medical achievement by successfully completing robotic-assisted mitral valve replacement (MVR) surgeries. The procedures were performed on a 16-year-old boy and a 76-year-old woman, demonstrating the versatility of the technology across age groups.
These complex surgeries employed robotic technology, enabling surgeons to access the heart through minimal incisions between the ribs. This advanced approach bypasses the need for conventional open-chest surgery, a crucial factor in facilitating a quicker recovery for patients.
The young patient, a 16-year-old from Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, had suffered from severe mitral valve disease leading to recurrent fever and an embolic stroke. Following the valve replacement, he is reported to be recovering steadily.
