Robots Perform First Cardiac Surgeries in Northeast India
27 Sep
Summary
- Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) performed the region's first robotic cardiac surgeries.
- Procedures included bypass, valve replacement, and atrial septal defect correction.
- Robotic surgery offers faster recovery through smaller incisions, avoiding open-heart.
In a groundbreaking development for healthcare in northeastern India, Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) successfully performed the region's first robotic cardiac surgeries over two days. These pioneering procedures took place at GMCH's CN Centre, marking a significant advancement in bringing sophisticated cardiac care to Assam.
The surgeries were conducted under the supervision of renowned Asian cardiac surgeon Dr. Ritwick Raj Bhuyan. The complex operations included a robotic bypass surgery, a robotic heart valve replacement, and a procedure to correct an atrial septal defect (ASD), a congenital heart condition involving a hole in the heart.
This initiative represents a major step forward, as no health institution in the northeast had previously performed robotic interventions for cardiac surgery. The health and family welfare minister, Ashok Singhal, expressed pride in GMCH leading this advancement, envisioning its expansion to other departments.
Robotic surgery offers distinct advantages over traditional open-heart procedures. By utilizing small incisions, it bypasses the need to open the chest, leading to significantly faster patient recovery times and shorter hospital stays. This method is particularly beneficial for pediatric and elderly patients.
