Robot Surgery Revolutionizes Spine Care
24 Jan
Summary
- New robotic technology enhances spinal surgery accuracy.
- Hospital becomes first in region to use £1m ExcelsiusGPS.
- Surgery time reduced significantly, aiding faster recovery.

A pioneering robotic system, the ExcelsiusGPS, is poised to transform spinal surgery at James Cook University Hospital, making it the first facility in the region to adopt this £1 million technology. Scheduled for introduction next month, this state-of-the-art equipment will significantly enhance surgical precision during procedures aimed at correcting spinal instability or curvature.
The ExcelsiusGPS system employs 3D imaging to assist surgeons in accurately placing spinal implants. This advanced navigation dramatically reduces the risks associated with vital structures such as nerves and the spinal cord. Consultant spinal neurosurgeon Simon Tizzard emphasized that this innovation allows for smaller incisions, consequently lowering infection risks, minimizing blood loss, and speeding up operation times.
