Staff at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) are marking a significant milestone: ten years of the Montgomery Unit, a specialist bone cancer centre. This unit, one of only five of its kind in the UK, treats bone and soft tissue sarcomas. Reflecting on the past decade, orthopaedic oncology surgeon Gill Cribb highlighted the dramatic improvements in facilities.
Initially, the unit's administrative and nursing staff worked from a converted toilet, and beds were shared with general wards. Today, the Montgomery Unit boasts a dedicated 10-bedded ward, outpatient clinics, and offices for the medical and support teams. These upgrades significantly enhance the experience for patients, many of whom travel long distances.
The enhanced facilities now include private rooms with amenities like an extra bed for family, a wet room, a personal television, and Wi-Fi access. Surgeon Gill Cribb emphasized that these improvements aim to provide the best possible experience during some of the most frightening times in patients' lives.
