20 Nov, 2025
Summary
- Four Rhode Island hospitals earned an 'A' grade from Leapfrog.
- One Rhode Island hospital received a 'D' grade for safety.
- Leapfrog grades general hospitals on patient safety factors.

A recent Leapfrog Group study has graded nine Rhode Island hospitals for patient safety. Four of these institutions achieved the highest "A" rating, indicating strong performance in patient care and safety measures. This recognition places them among the safest hospitals nationally.
Conversely, the study also identified areas for improvement. One Rhode Island hospital was given a "D" grade, falling below average in several critical areas. These included infection rates, patient falls, medication safety, and communication regarding patient care.
The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit dedicated to healthcare quality, assesses hospitals twice annually. Their grading system focuses on factors such as infection rates, surgical complications, and error prevention, excluding specialized facilities like VA or children's hospitals.
