New Drug Halts Sleep Apnea Symptoms
28 Oct
Summary
- Experimental drug retatrutide significantly reduced sleep apnea symptoms.
- Weight loss drug also improved cardiovascular risk factors.
- The drug is not yet FDA-approved, trials are ongoing.

An investigational obesity drug, retatrutide, demonstrated significant success in reducing symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in recent clinical trials.
Published in The New England Journal of Medicine, the phase 3 trials revealed that retatrutide led to substantial decreases in breathing interruptions and hypoxic burden.
Participants receiving the drug lost significant body weight, between 12% and nearly 20%, contributing to improved sleep and reduced sleep-related impairment.
Beyond its effects on sleep apnea, retatrutide also showed positive impacts on cardiovascular risk factors, including reduced blood pressure, cholesterol, and inflammation.
It also improved diabetes-related measures, with many participants either progressing from diabetes to prediabetes or no longer meeting diabetes criteria.
Researchers noted the drug's lack of FDA approval as a limitation, emphasizing the need for further studies on long-term cardiovascular outcomes.
Experts expressed optimism, highlighting retatrutide as a potential new therapy alongside existing treatments like CPAP for sleep apnea patients.
