Unfair Treatment Blocks US Healthcare for Refugees

Refugees resettling in the United States encounter significant hurdles in accessing necessary healthcare, even with formal pathways and insurance eligibility. While systems are in place for medical screenings and coverage, everyday discrimination proves to be a major impediment.

Research indicates that experiencing unfair treatment due to race, language, or culture in daily life makes it harder for refugees to seek medical attention. A study found that 66% of refugees reporting discrimination also cited barriers to healthcare, substantially higher than the 39% reported by those without such experiences.

This pattern persists even when accounting for factors like health status, financial hardship, or English proficiency. Discrimination in settings like housing or employment may erode trust, making refugees hesitant to approach healthcare providers.

The impact of discrimination is not evenly distributed. Black immigrant adults and women from various minority groups reported higher rates of unfair treatment and subsequent healthcare access issues, mirroring broader trends in U.S. healthcare disparities.
