Philanthropic giants are fueling a significant expansion in cancer care facilities. The Bekenstein and Lavine families recently made a substantial donation to Dana-Farber, securing naming rights for its new freestanding cancer hospital scheduled for a 2031 opening. This gift reportedly surpasses previous records for a single donation.
Separately, Mass General Brigham announced a $35 million contribution from Irving Oil. This donation is earmarked for its new cancer care institute, which will be anchored at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. The institute is a response to Dana-Farber's recent shift in partnerships.
MGB plans to invest $400 million in its cancer institute before its collaboration with Dana-Farber concludes in 2028. The project includes renovations and complements the construction of a new $1.9 billion building on MGH's campus. Irving Oil's gift will establish urgent cancer care and a healing garden within this new facility.
