Real Housewives Fight for HIV Med Access
19 Mar
Summary
- Reality stars lobbied Congress for cost-free HIV medication access.
- Several states cut drug programs, risking patient access to treatment.
- Advocacy highlights flat federal funding and rising healthcare costs.

A group of Real Housewives stars from across the nation recently converged on Capitol Hill to champion access to essential HIV medications. Erika Jayne, NeNe Leakes, Phaedra Parks, Melissa Gorga, Candiace Dillard Bassett, Marysol Patton, and Luann de Lesseps participated in the "Housewives on the Hill" event, aiming to prevent cost-free access to life-saving drugs from being jeopardized by state funding cuts.
The gathering highlighted that 18 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., have already curtailed drug assistance programs for individuals with HIV/AIDS, with an additional 12 states considering similar reductions. Federal funding for HIV programs has been stagnant since 2014, increasing the financial burden on states. Escalating healthcare expenses and the lapse of Affordable Care Act subsidies are further exacerbating the crisis, placing many patients in jeopardy of losing their medication.
The event, sponsored by telemedicine platform MISTR, also featured discussions with lawmakers about HIV care and funding in the United States. Speakers emphasized the impact of weakened programs like ADAP on working-class individuals who struggle to access necessary treatment.
