Guille-Alles Library, in collaboration with Guernsey Mind, has launched an initiative to emphasize the positive effects of reading on mental health. This partnership coincides with World Mental Health Day.
A curated selection of books, suggested by Guernsey Mind for relaxation and learning, is now available at the library. Communications officer Anna Symons highlighted reading's significant contribution to mental wellbeing.
Recent survey data from the States of Guernsey indicates that 90% of respondents experienced a positive impact on their sense of wellbeing from reading. The survey also revealed that 64% of adults and 39% of children engage in regular reading habits.
The library and Guernsey Mind aim to further boost these reading levels. Symons noted that reading also plays a crucial role in community building and alleviating loneliness, particularly through book clubs and peer discussions, fostering connections and empathy.
