Claims that raw milk is more nutritious or less likely to cause allergies have been debunked by the AAP, which states that pasteurized milk offers the same nutritional benefits. Over the past 20 years, illnesses linked to raw milk consumption have become more frequent, with children representing nearly half of those who fall ill.
Raw milk can harbor dangerous pathogens like Salmonella, Listeria, and E. coli, posing particular threats to infants, young children, pregnant individuals, and those with compromised immune systems. Infections from raw dairy during pregnancy can tragically lead to miscarriage or serious harm to newborns, even if the mother shows no symptoms.
The AAP's updated policy also addresses concerns regarding the H5N1 bird flu virus, which was detected in raw milk samples from dairy cattle in 2024. While human illness from drinking infected milk has not yet been reported, the AAP views the potential transmission risk as a concern.
Although federal law prohibits interstate shipping of raw milk, some states permit local sales, where most single-state outbreaks have occurred. Pediatricians are urged by the AAP to discuss raw dairy consumption with families and advocate for state laws banning its sale. Consumers are advised to seek immediate medical attention if they experience illness after consuming raw dairy or if pregnant and potentially exposed.
