Rat Infestations Plague Cars: Workshops See Surge
9 Oct
Summary
- Car repair workshops report a significant increase in vehicles infested by rats.
- Rats leave toxic excrement and chew wires, posing risks to car systems.
- Cold weather drives rodents to seek warmth and food in vehicles.
Car repair shops are experiencing an unusual increase in vehicles brought in with rat infestations. In Chelmsford, Essex, one workshop reported handling five such cars within a two-week period, alongside a tenfold rise in website visits to their page on rat-related issues.
Gary Wray, the workshop owner, explained that while the rats are often gone by the time the cars arrive, they leave behind significant damage. This includes toxic excrement and gnawed wiring under the hood. Pest control experts attribute this rise to the changing weather, as rodents seek warmth and accessible food.
Concerns have been raised about potential health risks from fumes emanating from rat urine and feces through vehicle ventilation systems. While serious illnesses like Leptospirosis or Hantavirus are unlikely in the UK, the UK Health Security Agency acknowledges a very low risk. The situation appears to be a seasonal issue, but an increase in occurrences this year has been noted.
