Rat Found in Gulab Jamun: Sweet Shop Sealed by FDA
8 Oct
Summary
- FDA sealed a sweet shop after a rat was filmed in gulab jamuns.
- Residents demanded action, prompting an FDA investigation.
- The shop lacked a mandatory Food Business Registration Certificate.
On Thursday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took action by sealing a sweet shop in Bhiwandi. This decision followed the viral circulation of a video depicting a rat within a container of gulab jamuns, raising significant concerns about food hygiene.
Local residents, disturbed by the footage, gathered on Wednesday evening and called for immediate action against the shopkeeper. In response, FDA officials visited the premises, collected samples of gulab jamun and other food items for laboratory testing, and initiated an inquiry. While the exact time of the video recording remains unconfirmed, the FDA also noted the absence of a mandatory Food Business Registration Certificate at the establishment.
The shopkeeper, however, presented an alternative explanation. He suggested a dispute with an employee over wages might have led to the incident. The shopkeeper alleged suspicion that the disgruntled employee could have intentionally placed the rat in the sweets and filmed it before disseminating the video online.
