Rare Ovarian Cancers Highly Curable: Awareness Campaign Launched
22 Nov
Summary
- Rare ovarian cancers affecting young women are highly curable.
- Early detection and treatment can preserve fertility in patients.
- A campaign aims to educate families on ovarian germ cell tumors.

Ovarian Germ Cell Tumours (OGCTs), a rare group of ovarian cancers, predominantly impact teenage girls and young women. These cancers, constituting only 2-3% of all ovarian cancers, are often highly curable when detected and treated early. Symptoms like abdominal pain can be easily overlooked, leading to delayed diagnosis. However, advancements in diagnosis, surgical expertise, and multidisciplinary care offer significant hope.
Narayana Health City in Bengaluru is championing the 'Hope & Healing' campaign to boost awareness about OGCTs. This initiative targets families in districts including Kalaburagi, Bidar, and Raichur, aiming to educate them on early detection and treatment possibilities. The focus is on the curability of these tumors and the potential to preserve fertility through timely intervention.
Success stories, including a 21-year-old who conceived naturally after fertility-sparing surgery and chemotherapy, and a 28-year-old treated with robotic surgery for a rare malignant transformation, underscore the effectiveness of modern treatment approaches. Expanded outreach OPDs in Kalaburagi and Raichur further aim to improve access to specialized care for women in the North Karnataka region.
