- Surgery was free of cost under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana scheme.
- The rare congenital defect affects 1 in 4,500 newborns in India.

Doctors at Government Rajindra Hospital recently performed a life-saving surgery on a one-day-old baby girl. She was born with a rare congenital defect, an undeveloped esophagus, preventing her from swallowing milk or saliva.
The successful surgery was conducted by a multi-disciplinary team, including paediatric surgeon Dr Ravi Garg. Treatment was entirely free, funded by the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana. This rare condition affects approximately one in every 4,500 newborns in India, and survival rates are generally low.
The baby, born on April 20, spent 26 days in the NICU post-surgery and is now recovering well. Such complex procedures in private facilities can cost between ₹12 lakh and ₹15 lakh, underscoring the vital role of government healthcare initiatives.
