Summary
- An 11-month-old received a rare mono-segmental liver transplant.
- The infant's mother donated a portion of her liver for the transplant.
- Doctors successfully normalized bilirubin levels post-transplant.

An 11-month-old infant, Zoraiz Shekh, received a life-saving mono-segmental liver transplant in Mumbai on October 3, 2025. He had been diagnosed at three months old with Crigler-Najjar Syndrome Type 1, a rare genetic disorder causing his liver to be unable to process bilirubin, leading to dangerously high levels.
His condition necessitated a liver transplant, and his mother, in her early 20s, became a donor. Surgeons at Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital performed the complex procedure, using a reduced segment of the mother's liver, weighing 150 grams, to safely fit the 8.5 kg infant.
The surgery, which lasted over 10 hours, was a first for the hospital and marked a rare mono-segmental liver transplant in an infant. Post-transplant, Zoraiz's bilirubin levels normalized within 10 to 12 days, clearing his jaundice for the first time.
After a three-week hospital stay, including two weeks in the ICU, Zoraiz was discharged. He is currently undergoing treatment with immunosuppressive medication to prevent rejection, with plans to gradually reduce the dosage.
