Doctors at Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad have successfully performed a rare living donor liver transplant on a baby. The infant, aged one year and ten months, was diagnosed with Glycogen Storage Disease Type III, a serious inherited metabolic disorder.
The groundbreaking surgery, conducted on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, was made possible through a donation of approximately 240 grams of liver tissue from the child's father. This complex procedure lasted around 14 hours and was performed entirely free of cost.
The transplant was facilitated under the Aarogyasri Health scheme, a government initiative. This vital service spared the family a potential cost of ₹50 lakh to ₹60 lakh, which would have been incurred at a private hospital.
