Summary
- Routine eye test detected rare eye cancer in Anne Haslam.
- Diagnosed with ocular uveal melanoma in 2022.
- Fundraising for specialized treatment not covered by NHS.
A routine eye examination unexpectedly revealed a rare form of cancer for Anne Haslam. In 2022, she was diagnosed with ocular uveal melanoma, a tumor affecting her retina.
Initially experiencing no symptoms, Haslam, a fit and healthy mountaineer and cyclist, was referred to hospital following her optician's assessment. A subsequent scan confirmed the presence of a tumor in her left eye.
Although she has received treatment, her cancer has unfortunately progressed and spread to her liver. Haslam is now undertaking fundraising efforts to access a specialized treatment that is not provided by the National Health Service (NHS).
She described the diagnosis as a shock and has found the subsequent medical journey challenging, requiring her to be her own advocate in exploring available treatment options.
