In a significant medical achievement, doctors at the Army Institute of Cardio-Thoracic Sciences (AICTS) in Pune have successfully performed a rare and complex catheter-based dual-valve implantation. This minimally invasive procedure, termed bicaval transcatheter valve implantation (CAVI), involved simultaneously implanting prosthetic valves in the superior and inferior vena cava.
The patient had previously undergone heart valve replacement but developed severe tricuspid regurgitation, a condition causing debilitating symptoms due to improper valve closure. Repeat open-heart surgery for such cases carries substantial risks.
Instead of conventional surgery, the AICTS team utilized the catheter-based approach, implanting valves in the veins leading to the right atrium. This innovative technique prevents backward blood flow, improving circulation while avoiding the trauma of open-heart surgery. The patient recovered successfully.
This successful procedure highlights India's growing expertise in advanced structural heart interventions and offers a potentially life-changing alternative for patients deemed too high-risk for repeat open-heart surgery.
