Summary
- A veterinarian and staff performed a rare dog blood transfusion with minimal equipment.
- The dog's hemoglobin level was critically low at 7g/dL before the transfusion.
- Guidance and technical support were provided remotely by other veterinary professionals.
In a remarkable feat of veterinary skill, a veterinarian and his two assistants successfully performed a critical blood transfusion on a dog with severely low hemoglobin. The procedure, rarely accomplished in the Malnad region due to a lack of basic infrastructure, took place at the veterinary hospital in Jayapura.
The recipient was a four-year-old crossbreed suffering from tick fever and an infected uterus, with a hemoglobin level of just 7g/dL, making it unfit for immediate surgery. The veterinary team utilized only a stethoscope and constant monitoring of the dog's heartbeat for the transfusion.
Guidance was provided remotely by veterinarians from Chikkamagaluru and Udupi, with technical support from Tumakuru. The nearly two-hour procedure involved transfusing 80ml of blood into the 8kg dog. The donor was a larger crossbreed owned by the same individual.
Following the transfusion, the dog, which had not eaten for three days, began eating again, indicating a positive response. The animal is now expected to undergo surgery within the next couple of days to address the infected uterus, a testament to the dedication and ingenuity of the veterinary team.
