Ranchi Village Battles Malaria: 170 Cases Detected Amidst Fever Survey
3 Jul
Summary
- 170 asymptomatic malaria cases detected in Belbera village, Ranchi district.
- Intensive surveillance and treatment drive launched to prevent further spread.
- Patients receive doorstep treatment with a three-day anti-malarial drug course.
Health authorities in Ranchi have initiated a significant surveillance and treatment operation following the detection of 170 asymptomatic malaria cases. These cases were identified in Belbera village, located in the Tamar block, between June 27 and Friday, July 3, 2026. The operation began after a patient from Bundu block, who had visited Belbera, was diagnosed with malaria.
Mass fever surveys were conducted across 12 localities within Belbera, a village comprising approximately 40 families. While no cerebral malaria cases have been reported, the sheer number of asymptomatic infections necessitated a swift response. Health teams are now administering a three-day anti-malarial drug course directly to patients' homes. Primaquine tablets are also being distributed to prevent relapses and further spread of the disease.
This surge in cases has heightened concerns, especially given a concurrent cerebral malaria outbreak in East Singhbhum district that resulted in four fatalities. The health department has since directed all district administrations to increase vigilance, bolster fever surveillance, ensure adequate supplies of diagnostic kits and medicines, and intensify mosquito control measures in high-risk areas.
