Summary
- Rakul Preet Singh suffered a severe back injury from a deadlift.
- She was bedridden for 40 days, unable to perform basic functions.
- Expert advice emphasizes proper form and gradual progression for deadlifts.

Rakul Preet Singh, 35, recently shared the harrowing details of a back injury incurred due to a workout error. She described how lifting 80 kg in a deadlift without a safety belt, a weight she normally handles with one, resulted in a disc injury. For 40 days, Singh was confined to bed, describing herself as a 'vegetable' unable to perform simple daily tasks or even turn over.
Her recovery was significantly aided by the mental support from her husband, Jackky Bhagnani. Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon Dr. Priyank Patel explained that while belts offer support, technique flaws, poor form, or exceeding capacity can lead to disc prolapse. He stressed that gym injuries often result from a combination of factors, including lifting too much weight, fatigue, and insufficient warm-ups, even affecting experienced lifters.
Symptoms of a slipped disc include lower back pain, muscle spasms, and difficulty walking. If a nerve is compressed, pain can radiate to the legs, accompanied by numbness or weakness. Dr. Patel advises prioritizing good technique, gradual progression, and core strengthening for deadlifts, warning against lifting heavier weights than the body can manage and to heed the body's warning signs.
