The recent events in Bikaner bear a striking resemblance to the earlier crisis in Kota. In Kota, Shirin died following a uterine procedure, and four other women—Payal, Jyoti Nayak, Priya Mahawar, and Pinki Mahawar—succumbed to complications after various surgeries.
Families in Kota allege urinary and kidney issues post-surgery. Preliminary findings from Kota indicated falling blood pressure and organ dysfunction shortly after Caesarean deliveries. Bikaner is now reporting similar patterns: acute kidney injury, platelet abnormalities, sepsis, and multi-organ failure.
Expert committees have been formed to investigate both Bikaner and Kota cases, scrutinizing treatment, infection control, medications, and post-operative care. While four medical personnel were suspended in Kota due to preliminary findings of patient care lapses, no definitive cause has been established for either episode. The sale and use of oxytocin injections were halted across Rajasthan after samples failed testing in Kota, though missing oxytocin is not considered a cause of death.
Rajasthan is grappling with the unresolved mystery of why healthy women are experiencing severe health deterioration, including kidney failure and organ collapse, after seeking treatment and childbirth services in government hospitals. Investigations are ongoing.
