Rajasthan is facing a severe maternal healthcare crisis, with 108 women dying in government hospitals within the last 50 days. The grim statistics include 73 deaths in August and 35 in the first 20 days of September. Officials attribute these fatalities primarily to postpartum haemorrhage, severe anaemia, and complications arising from delayed referrals to adequate medical facilities.
The crisis has left newborns motherless and families devastated, with recent incidents in Bundi and Churu underscoring the urgent need for intervention. In Churu, an auxiliary nurse midwife was held responsible for negligence in one case. The state health department has been monitoring maternal deaths since May, aiming to strengthen services and ensure timely identification and care for high-risk pregnancies.
In response to the escalating situation, authorities have issued directives to ensure all four antenatal check-ups are completed on time for high-risk women. Furthermore, the new Prasav Sakhi program has been launched to enhance coordination among hospital staff, providing continuous support from admission through postnatal care.
