Milk Scare: Toddler's Health Crisis Uncovers City-Wide Disaster
27 Feb
Summary
- Contaminated milk led to acute renal failure and anuria in multiple consumers.
- Five deaths reported, including children, with 15 others critically ill.
- Toxicology reports are pending to identify the exact contaminant in the milk.

A disturbing public health crisis emerged in Rajamahendravaram city after a young child's acute renal failure and anuria were linked to suspected milk adulteration. The incident began unfolding around February 16, when the child exhibited severe symptoms after consuming milk supplied by a local vendor. Investigations revealed that this vendor had supplied milk to 106 families between February 16 and 18.
Tragically, by February 24, five individuals had died, with reports indicating that 15 others, including three young children, required intensive care, including dialysis and ventilator support, as of February 26. The affected individuals were primarily the elderly and children under six years old. The State government has since announced free treatment for all affected families and ex gratia payments for the deceased.
While preliminary tests confirmed milk adulteration, the specific contaminant causing these severe nephrotoxic effects remains unidentified. Samples have been sent to multiple laboratories for thorough toxicological analysis. The dairy vendor, Addala Ganeswararao, was arrested on February 23 and is currently in judicial custody. Authorities are investigating the dairy unit for operating without proper food safety protocols.
