Radiation Therapy Boosts Bladder Cancer Survival Rates
5 Jun
Summary
- Radiation therapy reduced recurrence risk in high-risk bladder cancer.
- Improved survival rates observed with post-surgery radiation.
- Minimal severe toxicity noted with the adjuvant radiation treatment.

A phase-3 clinical trial suggests that post-surgery radiation therapy can significantly lower the risk of recurrence in patients diagnosed with high-risk muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). The study, involving 153 nonmetastatic MIBC patients in India, revealed improved locoregional control for those receiving adjuvant pelvic intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT).
After a median follow-up of 47 months, the radiotherapy group demonstrated a higher 2-year locoregional recurrence-free survival rate of 87.1% compared to 76% in the observation group. While disease-free and overall survival rates also improved with radiotherapy, these gains were not statistically significant. The treatment showed minimal added severe toxicity, bolstering its potential integration into standard care regimens.
