23 Oct
Summary
- Over 450 villagers received anti-rabies shots after drinking cow's milk.
- The cow died showing symptoms that veterinarians suspected were rabies.
- Health officials organized vaccination camps in Dadi Khas village.
A health scare unfolded in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, following the death of a cow suspected of having rabies. Approximately 450 villagers who consumed 'charanamrit' prepared from the cow's milk during Durga Puja have since received anti-rabies vaccinations. This collective vaccination effort was organized by the health department in Dadi Khas village.
The incident began when the cow's owner noted its deteriorating health, which progressed to abnormal behavior and barking before its death. Veterinarians, including private practitioners and a doctor from the Dadi Khas veterinary hospital, suspected a dog bite as the potential cause, leading to the rabies concern. The milk had been distributed to local households and shops, raising alarm among residents of Dadi Khas and neighboring Govindpur village.
A health department team conducted a vaccination camp on Wednesday, with around 50 individuals having received the vaccine on Tuesday. The CHC in-charge advised those concerned to consult medical professionals for necessary vaccination guidance. He also emphasized the importance of boiling milk thoroughly before consumption and avoiding raw milk, though rabies transmission through milk is not an established route.
