4 Oct

- A man died after a stray dog licked his face.
- Dog saliva can transmit rabies through broken skin or eyes.
Experts are cautioning the public about the dangers of rabies, even from young puppies, emphasizing the need for precautions for dog owners and lovers. Dog saliva can carry the rabies virus, which can enter the body through mucous membranes of the mouth, eyes, or through broken skin, but not intact skin.
A stark reminder of this danger occurred recently when a 46-year-old man from Challakere died from rabies. He was sleeping outdoors when a stray dog with drooling saliva sat on his chest. While attempting to move the dog away, he accidentally scratched his finger. He did not report any bite or scratch and had not received anti-rabies vaccination.
Despite no immediate apparent injury, the man developed rabies symptoms approximately September 8, 2026. He was initially treated at Chitradurga Medical Institute, but his condition worsened, leading to his transfer to Epidemic Disease Control Hospital on September 11, 2026. Tragically, he succumbed to the disease by September 12, 2026, having developed hydrophobia and aerophobia.
